Dante Adventure – In It Together

dog-1018983_640There was no way Skipper was going to come out from under the bed. He knew where he was going if he came out. I know I wouldn’t want to go there, and I was sure he didn’t either. This was only getting clearer as Skipper dug in deeper.

Gracie was struggling to reach, but Skipper was just out of reach. Promise of treats and playtime weren’t working on my fluffy pal. Skipper squirmed and wiggled every time Gracie’s reach got too close.

Skipper was wise to the ruse of tasty treats and fun-time promises. He knew he was in for a trip to the groomers. Yes, he was going to get his fur trimmed and his claws clipped. He was going to get a bath and all sorts of crazy shenanigans. All sorts of scary stuff. I know there are other dogs out there that understand. Oh, and that dreaded brush that finds all the tangles.

“You know you’re going one way or the other,” I tried to ease the situation, “Better off just getting it over with and come on out.”

“No way,” Skipper woofed as he sneezed out a dust bunny. “I’m never coming out.”

“What if you get hungry?” I asked.

“You can bring me some food then,” Skipper nodded with a matter-of-fact attitude.

“Not gonna do it,” I answered.

“You have to!” Skipper pleaded.

I just yawned and slumped over, trying to look as relaxed as possible. I had planted the seed of hunger, and it wouldn’t be long before the pup’s belly started barking at him to snack on something. Sure, I was helping Gracie out by making it hard on my pal, but I knew the end of things. Skipper was going to the groomers sooner or later. I just wanted to get it over with.

“Come on!” Skipper whined. “Just bring me a biscuit or something…please?”

“Nope.”

“I don’t want to go to get my fur cut, I just got it matted the way I like it,” Skipper barked at me.

“To bad.”

“I can’t believe you’d do this to me,” Skipper woofed. “Make way, I’m coming out!”

Skipper wiggled out from under the bed and shook off all the dust. He made a face at me and then tried to make one last break for it. His little legs gained traction as he raced out of the room and wound around the corner towards the sofa. I knew what he was doing. But it was only buying him a little more time. The trip to the groomer was eventual.

Gracie caught the rascal after three laps around the sofa, and my little buddy was dragged out to the truck. My work here was done. Gracie would surely owe me a treat later this evening. Perhaps a small tidbit from her plate. Just a morsel of a payment to be expected.

Unfortunately, I was in for more than I’d expected. Gracie returned for me, ready for another race. She was all wound up too. And I wasn’t expecting any of this. I just sat still as the leash caught a hold of me and I was led down the steps as well.

We both were going to the groomers. Next time, both of us are hiding under the bed and Gracie will just have to figure out things on her own.
