Dante Adventure – Morning Call

alley-cat-890285_640Skipper woke me up again. He’s been kicking all night, chasing rabbits or something. But now it is morning, and my friends are already up and shuffling about the old house. Hopefully, they’re planning on making a delicious breakfast because I’m still hungry. Probably because I had to keep getting up and moving all night…you know, avoiding Skipper the kicking machine. Every time I moved though, he was right there ready to snuggle up next to me again. So he’s probably hungry too.

I got up and trotted over to see what Gracie and the others were up too. Skipper followed right behind me, his head bobbling around groggily as he tried to stay close. He had to bump into the sofa before realizing he still needed to open his eyes.

“So what’s for breakfast?” I woofed.

My friends all squinted at me suspiciously, sipping their drinks as they pondered why I was in the kitchen again. Oops, I forgot. I turned about and sat on the threshold and eyed them back, still wondering what we were gonna eat. Skipper stayed in the kitchen a little longer, blinking away the sleep in his eyes before getting the same memo.

We pups sat impatiently while our pals seemed to do their best to take up the whole morning just lounging about and sipping their hot wake’em up drinks. I guess that’s okay though. Gracie does that real slow too…but afterwards it’s high speed go-go-go.

Sure enough, our friends were moving quicker and quicker, and food stuffs were being tossed up on the stove. The scent was delicious.

Outside, the biggest chicken was crying again, making all sorts of ruckus. But that’s probably just mad because he wasn’t allowed inside to enjoy the food.

But just when we thought it was time for breakfast, we were escorted outside. There, Gracie placed two bowls for each of us and filled them up with our regular food. And I thought this was supposed to be vacation time!

“Really?” Skipper woofed and tried to dart back through the door before it closed.

“Looks like it’s going to be a tough day,” I ruffed and started chomping down.

Skipper grabbed some of his food and went to the screen door where he crunched his pebbles as loud as possible, probably trying to make sure the others saw him eating.

“It’s delicious,” Skipper woofed through the door before returning for another mouthful.

A few loud crunches later, and Skipper barked, “I’m willing to trade you some of my delicious food for some of yours!”

“That’s not going to work,” I woofed to my silly little buddy. “At least not on them…”

You see, all the commotion my furry friend had created had drawn the attention of another. One cat, a big one, sat on the edge of the porch, watching us eat. Sort of strange, but I kept eating anyway.

But when I looked up, there was another cat sitting beside the first. This one was a little bit bigger. Weird, but cats never really bothered me. I just thought it was odd that these rascals would be so daring to sit so close to a hungry dog.

I munched some more, and realized there were two more cats, bigger than the others sitting in a row at the edge of the porch. Things were not right. I tried to get Skipper’s attention, but he was still busy trying to show off how delicious his food was and trying to strike a deal with the others inside.

“Skipper, I come and check this out,” I turned to bark at my preoccupied friend.

But when I had turned back to keep an eye on the cats to make sure they weren’t growing in numbers, I was too late.

I watched helplessly as the food bowls were dragged away by the small herd of cats. I didn’t dare tell them no. Too many. And I really wasn’t that hungry anyway. At least not anymore.
