Dante Adventure – The Ascent

border-collie-662711_640Skipper and I spent the whole day trying to figure out how to get up there. It had become a game by the end, one try after the other. It was a challenge at the first, but quickly began to be fun stuff. Lot’s of fun. I’d try hopping up and fall down, and then Skipper would bounce off me and try his little shortness at it. I’m sure we knocked over a few things around the room, but it was too much fun to really pay attention to anything else.

I bounced off the wall and tried to get up there again. But I pretty much flopped around and missed the target instead. Then it was Skipper’s turn again, and his paws launched off my belly which was rather uncomfortable. But he fell short too.

“How do we get up there?” Skipper panted heavily. “It’s too high.”

“We’re gonna have to do the climb,” I advised from my rolled over position on the floor.

Skipper sat and panted, probably considering the difficulty of the climb. But it was the only way up there. He was determined, possibly more than I, to get up there and see what it was that was so fascinating. Indeed, there was some intrigue to the mystery of what was up there, and the only way to get rid of an itch is to scratch it.

We started at the sofa. It was nice easy way to begin. A few moments to pause for the paws, and then we moved onward. Next step up was the ledge behind the sofa. It was a small one, just enough to barely manage a grip, but you can get it if you try. From here, we have to make the jump to the little table. It’s the only way for us to get up there, and now that the vase is gone, it’s a much clearer landing spot. I made it easy enough, but Skipper struggled to hold on.

Now it was time to use the shelves. This was the scary part because it involved creeping. I’m not really good at it, but Skipper does his wiggle worm thing and gets right on across without shaking the shelf too much. So I waited here and watched as my friend made it to the other side and checked the next jump.

“This is it,” I woofed, “You make the jump, you’re totally up there.”

“I’s gonna do it,” Skipper told himself and ruffled his coat to make ready.

After waiting until he was good and ready, he made the jump. It was more like a spring launch though, just straight out and toward the target. It was like watching my little buddy grow wings and fly through the air. Well, at least for a moment.

“You made it!” I barked as Skipper scrambled his rear paws to make sure he was all gathered up in one spot. “What do you see?”

Skipper turned and looked around the room. He sniffed the spot where he was and sat down, staring at things from a different point of view. It must have been really cool because he was really quiet for once in his life.

“So what is it? What do you see?” I begged an answer.

“Everything is on the other side of the room,” Skipper began, cocking his head a little to the side. “Other than that, really not anything special.”

My excitement was put out like a sneeze after a cold drink of water. There had to be something cool up there, it was so hard to get up, there must be something to see. I looked around the room, everything was where it was supposed to be, except for Skipper…

“Wait a sec,” I barked, “There is something different!”

“What? What do you see?” Skipper looked around trying to spot the difference.

“You’re way up there… And you’re supposed to be down here!”

“That’s right!” Skipper danced a little on the small spot above the looking glass. “Now I know what’s so special about this spot indeed.”
