The wind was wild, fluffing the fur as it blew across the park. Nixi could smell all sorts of things, but they were so mixed that her nose couldn’t tell what was what. Was it the ducks from the pond? Maybe a little bit of perfume on a pup, and a fresh canister of tennis balls just got opened somewhere nearby.
Nixi described all these things to Shuffles, but he couldn’t tell the difference. So Nixi got to paint a picture for the younger pup so his nose would be keen to these very important things in the future, because every dog needs to know what a fresh tennis ball smells like before the first throw.
“You see, a fresh tennis ball that’s never ever been thrown has this wonderful smell,” Nixi explained to Shuffles. “There’s a bit of a snippid smell that is similar to a leaf from the sweet tree over there that drops in the fall time.”
“Well what does that smell like?”
The wind blew another whiff of scents onto the pups, fluttering the grass and blasting them with a strong pond smell. With the wind so strong, there weren’t any other pups out brave enough to enjoy such a day. But it was on the schedule, so the pups were here with their pal who was strolling along the play area to get some exercise.
“The leaves that fall in the fall time smell sort of like one of the boxes that the mailman drops off at the door,” Nixi described the best she could.
“Oh, well I remember that one from yesterday, but all I could smell was the fuzzy stuff in the box,” Shuffles carried on with his own description. “It was sort of funny smelling, just like the bottom drawer in the office.”
Nixi wondered about what that smelled like, but couldn’t quite put her paw on it. “I don’t know, but it’s probably just like when the closet door opens.”
“Where the evil vacuum sleeps?” Skipper’s ears drooped back.
“Naw, the one with the socks on the floor,” Nixi shook her ears in the wind so her pal wouldn’t be thinking about such dreadful things.
“What about the smell when Brandon makes the “noch-yos” with the chips and stuffs?”
Nixi’s mouth watered. “Oh, that’s a good smell, but that’s not it. It is even better though.”
Brandon finally got back to where his pups were laying, struggling against the wind himself. It was too much for a day outside, but he wanted to tire the pups out so they wouldn’t be all wild and crazy when they got back to the apartment.
So very suddenly and without any warning at all, Brandon reached down and wrestled with Nixi, spinning her around and then tickling her belly. Then he took a big sniff in her ear (he knows this tickles her silly) and told her that she needed a bath. The smell was far too strong to be permitted to go on any longer. After he’d done the same to Shuffles, they thought it was playtime again. But no. Indeed, it was bathtime, for the smells of the windy outdoors had soaked in a little too much, and oh boy, those pups were in for a surprise.
