Rocky Adventure – Uninvited Guest

dog-1123016_640There was nothing odd about today. It was all going according to plan right from the beginning. In fact, I was right in the middle of my regularly scheduled nap time in the sunbeam peaking through the blinds onto my favorite spot on the left side of the sofa when there was a strange sound at the door. You see, normally the old man is rustling bags or juggling boxes when he’s at the door. But today there was a different sound.

I greeted the old man at the door promptly to see if he needed any help. And that’s when I got the surprise. The old man wasn’t alone, and who he was with was not on my list of people, pups, and other critters that I know. And that’s a pretty long list.

The scruffy rascal eyed me from high above, looking at everything all wide eyed. I do believe that there was a gleam of mischief in his eye as he checked out the place.

“Who is this? And why are you carrying around another pup?” I demanded.

The old man smiled at me with a fair greeting, and then proceeded to carry the pup through the house. I followed closely, keeping an eye on things. This was definitely unorthodox. Completely out of the norm. Just plain weird. It was not on the schedule.

The back door swung open and the old man escorted the mystery pup out into my yard. There was no way I was letting them out of my sight until I knew what was going on around here.

“Who are you? I asked the pup.

“I’m lost,” the pup eyed me suspiciously. “Is this my house?”

The old man chattered behind me, whispering funny stuff into his little box he talks to sometimes. I’ve warned him about talking to his toys like that, but if it makes him happy and keeps him entertained, I guess it’s cool.

I followed the “lost” pup around the yard as he sniffed things and inspected all my stuff. Then he started leaving messages and marking stuff as his own. That was not cool. And when I tried to explain it to him nicely, he simply grinned smugly, telling me that he knew exactly what he was doing.

“Alright, you gotta go,” I barked. “I consider myself a hospitable pup, but not if you’re gonna have attitude.”

There was a chase that ensued. Luckily, the pup was lost the whole time, not knowing where to turn or shortcuts or where the squirrel’s had made holes in search of buried treasures. Basically, it wasn’t hard for me to catch the rascally guest, but that really wasn’t my goal.

“Whoa,” the pup panted after a long round about the yard, “just tell me one thing…do I get your bed or can I sleep on the bed tonight?”

“That’s it, you gotta go!” I barked. And another hot pursuit ensued as we raced around the yard.

After a few laps around the tree, the old man caught the mischievous pup and scooped him up high so I couldn’t even reach his tail. Then I asked the old man what he was thinking just bringing in strange pups like that without even asking me if it was cool with me. But the old man just nodded at me and pointed back to the house.

I followed the old man as he lumbered through the house, carrying the rascally pup who was just a grinning and eyeing everything around the house like it was his. I could see the wild thoughts race across his whiskers as his tail wagged in hope of claiming all the things.

“Hey, that lamp is mine…the sofa too, and that door. It’s mine too!” the pup laughed as he was escorted through the house.

But the pups would take nothing with him nor would he claim any to be his. You see I heard the whole story later when my pal got back. The old man was just being a nice guy today. Even though it wasn’t on his schedule, he had found the lost pup wandering around the streets and had scooped him up. It didn’t take long to find the friends who were missing him so he could be back where his stuff is…and leave my stuff alone forever.
