Nixi sat and watched her friend dance around. This had become one of those strange pastimes that was just amazingly intriguing. It was as if her new friend had become his own source of pure entertainment, even for himself. Nothing was boring anymore. There was always something going on, something to behold, some manner of mischief to wiggle one’s way in and out of.
Shuffles romped around, backing up in his odd manner, and going right on forward like a mini dragster racing against himself. He was having fun and keeping everyone else entertained at the same time. You see, there was an audience.
Brandon had invited a couple over for a visit, mostly just showing off the funny little pup that was presently chasing his hinder quarters. But there was something mysterious about the visit according to Nixi. Most of the time, a pair of visitors would pop in for a snack and a game or like manner. But these visitors did not pay much attention at all to food, neither did they seem interested in Nixi at all.
Shuffles had all the attention. When they’d first arrived, there was an odd examination, like sniffing the ears and poking the nose, and checking the belly, but no real game playing. It was weird. At least that’s what Nixi thought. Especially when after that, no one really wanted to play, except for Shuffles that is. He was just in the playing mood even if he had to do it all on his own.
Everyone just simply watched as the young pup made all the fun himself. But it was the visitors that had Nixi’s attention. They chatted with Brandon, asking and telling him things, but not really appearing excited in the least.
After much conversation on the people’s part, the visitors stooped down and scooped Shuffles up into their arms, examining him further. The puppy immediately froze and made a face. He was confused, but was perhaps too confused to properly express what he was thinking. But his face told the story best.
“Hey, put him down,” Nixi ruffed. “He belongs to me.”
The visitors shook their heads and turned around as if to leave. But Nixi wasn’t about to allow that. She slipped around them and blocked their pathway, insisting that they put her friend back down.
And then Shuffles started whining and crying and making a fuss. That’s when Nixi warned the visitors that they’d better put the puppy down right away. And again she warned, but the people would not listen to her.
That’s when it happened. You see, the visitors did not speak dog in the least, so they had no idea what Shuffles was actually whining about. All that excitement and play and dancing had brought about potty time. And being a puppy, holding it wasn’t an option.
Needless to say, the visitors left in a hurry…without Shuffles. Brandon had tried to apologize, but there was no pleading with them. After a short fuss, the visitors were out the door, still wiping their clothes vigorously and muttering against the silly little pup.
Nixi eyed Shuffles as he plopped his haunches on the floor. He just smiled with his tongue hanging out, his floppy ears still fluttering with excitement. Then with a grin, he gave Nixi a wink and went back to chasing nothing at all.
