Dog Journal – Entry 100: Slippery

dog-1196642_640Have you ever heard the sound of food wrappers being opened and suddenly found yourself compelled to race as fast as you can to the kitchen? What dog hasn’t? Well, it just so happens that not all of the home is covered in that fluffy carpet that offers such awesome traction.

Instead, it seemed that someone at some point decided to play a mean trick and build the whole kitchen floor out of nothing but pure slipperiness. Honestly, I think it has something to do with the food being kept in there, but it really doesn’t matter. A dog just has to learn to deal with these things.

So what do you do with slippery floors? First of all, you need to know where they are because if you’re racing around and suddenly happen upon a slick surface, you’re paws will not do what you want them to anymore.

My advice is to take it slow. Do a little hop when you padder along the floor. It helps if the floor is cold too, especially if you’re one of those pups that loves to stay warm all the time. Basically, you are going to have to be a lot more patient, even if it seems like if you don’t hurry, you’re going to miss out on something delicious.

Also, don’t try to stop too fast. At the same time, don’t take off too excitedly either. Remember you can’t turn if you’re going to fast. I’ve run into to many things trying to change direction on slippery floors. You just keep on sliding until something stops you.

So beware of slippery floors. Know where they are, and always slow down. And remember, there comes a time of the year when even places outside can get that way too. So relax, and watch where you put your paws.
